Where should I start learning anatomy drawing? ›

When you first approach figure drawing, you need to start out with establishing the basic volumes of the figure using spheres, boxes, and cylinders. By simply beginning with these basic shapes and then building up the complexity as you go along, you will be able to make your drawing maintain its sense of dimension.

Here are some of my sketchbooks where I make anatomical drawings and scribble notes about proportions and construction of a human body, head and face. Doing such exercises on a regular basis is a great way to learn anatomy for artists.

It's something that you slowly build alongside your other skills, so in total it might take a couple of years to really get a good understanding of anatomy. But you don't have to think about it as this huge project that you only succeed with after two years. Break it down into smaller chunks.

To begin with, draw the head in the first segment. This is typically an oval shape; however, you can adjust the proportions to match whatever figure and body type you want to achieve. Starting with the head may feel unnatural, but it really helps you get the flow of the body, as you work your way down from head to toe.

One of the most effective ways to learn anatomy is through active learning and visualization techniques. Instead of passively reading textbooks or lecture notes, actively engage with the material. Use visual aids such as anatomical models, diagrams, and interactive apps to enhance your understanding.

A great way to ease yourself into learning a new anatomy topic is with anatomy labeling worksheets. The idea is simple - study the structures you need to learn on a labeled overview image, and then try labeling each structure yourself using an unlabeled diagram.

To begin, I suggest starting small and simple. Think of the different types of shapes and find objects from your daily life, and from nature, that include many of those shapes. Then, draw them a lot. Start with the basic shapes you see—i.e., circles, squares, triangles, etc.

The human body is complex, so creating anatomically correct drawings isn't something you can learn in a day; it may take weeks of practice and studying reference drawings to truly understand the shape of each muscle and how they all connect.

In a college or university setting, when learning anatomy, students usually have difficulty trying to visualize different aspects of the human body, which inherently are too complex or abstract to fully understand without the aid of useful visual explanations or visualizations.

Let me explain: it takes a person hours of practice to become a master of anything. Assuming you have little or no prior drawing experience, mastering drawing in three months would be like mastering a sport like soccer or basketball in three months.

To fully understand diagrams, try redrawing them and annotate them with facts and features. When you draw bones, muscles or tissue use different colours for each to make them easier to visualize. Then hang the diagrams and charts around the room on the walls to visualize the bigger picture.
