LARGE Camera Stores in Central Florida?

Nov 22, 2006

Total newbie here... I am hoping to purchase a Rebel XTi and some Canon lenses (probably 10-22 & 70-300 IS) during my winter stay in (Sebring) Florida. I would prefer to test lenses, and even different versions of the SAME lens, to ensure I purchase good copies. So... I'm looking for info on LARGE camera stores in Central Florida which sells Canon equipment (I'm guessing probably Tampa/St Pete or Orlando, including suburbs). Any recommendations? Can camera dealers be persuaded to give "package deals" when you are laying down a healthy some of money (i.e. thousands), or is it pretty much the listed prices?

Thanks in advance... --Paul.

I live just south of Tampa. I looked into some of these big stores, but decided to buy from B & H photo in New York. They are much cheaper and have better service. You can reach them at:http://www.bhphotovideo.com.

Interesting that you mention B&H, because that was the (online) store at the top of my list, but I would appreciate "seeing" what I'm buying. I'm sure B&H gets throw-backs from customers, and I was thinking they might end up shipping me one of these rejected lenses. Does B&H (and other stores) send these rejected lenses back to Canon for repair, or do they just put them back in their stock? How MUCH cheeper are B&H's prices compared to the other stores you examined? --Paul.

There is only one I know and it's called colonial photo and hobby. It's located near downtown orlando.

The other one around here is ritz camera and the chain is spread all around central florida.
http://www.ritzcamera.com

Both have cameras in stock, but colonial photo carries more lens options than ritz.

I can recommend "North Tampa Photography" on Busch Blvd. in Tampa. They are a full line Canon dealer and are very knowledgeable about Canon gear and photography in general from shooting to post processing to printing. They also handle Nikon, Minolta, etc. etc. They are a full line dealer that caters to pro's and amatuer alike. They speak film, digital, lighting, developing, medium, large, you name it. Their prices are competitive but of course you have to pay tax. I've purchased a number of Canon digital SLR's from them as well as lenses and they definitely stand behind their products. Really nice people.

I agree, Colonial P&H has a much more knowledgable staff than any Ritz Camera around. The only catch if you're from out of state, it would be a PITA to return anything. If you have a Ritz camera close to your hometown, I'd get the lens from Ritz... I've been to a few of their local stores and the only one worth a flip is the store ACROSS the street from the florida mall. Additionally, they will Price match Colonial P&H if the item is in stock...

North Tampa Photography on Busch Blvd in Tampa is the best shop I've found in the Tampa, Orlando area. Very good selection on Canon equipment, competitive prices, and knowledgeable employees. I've been buying from them for many years.

I've purchased a few things at North Tampa Photography also. They do have a good selection and are "nice", but I found them expensive and not very helpful. They seem to be more of a Nikon shop. I purchased my 70-200 lens there and the gentleman behind the counter was content to simply sit quitetly there while I was making up my mind, not offering any alternatives, suggestions, asking me questions about how I plan to use it, etc. I also purchased a couple other lens there, but I've decided that they are too expensive and don't offer any expertise so I'll order online in the future.

Hi I live in neighboring Wauchula (about 25 min away) and I recently purchase a XTI setup, I actually played with a XT that a friend owned and then decided to buy an XTI after much research it i bought it online from newegg.com, they have the cheapest price on the bodies and most lenses, there customer service and shipping speed is excellent. I bought a Silver XTI, 580EX, 28-135 IS USM, and many other accessories. There is a store in Lakeland but I have never been to it but it seems nice here is the address http://www.marshallscamera.com/
