I'm using Captivate 2. I'm not sure exactly how it happens, but it seems when I open multiple files at once, opening a filewhen possibly another file still saving, I keep getting this error- Runtime Error 217 at 0041213A. I also sometimes receive errorsabout a DAT file but don't have a snapshot of it.
Is there some limit of opening number of files, saving etc.that I could understand better so I don't receive this error. Thishas happened in the past and a few times I got messages saying Ihad to reinstall and reactivate Captivate.
Any guidance would be appreciated.
Shawn

Hello Shawn,
You might like to try renaming the .dat file, located via thefollowing path...
Drive Letter:\Documents and Settings\UserName\ApplicationData\Adobe\Adobe Captivate
...to something like - Old_captivate_v20.dat
Now when you restart, Captivate will generate a new .datfile. This should resolve any .dat error messages you receive. FYIthe .dat file is used to store Captivate settings.
As for the Runtime Error you have encountered, I have seenthis one on a number of occasions, but have never managed to get tothe bottom of it. I've seen it with 2 files open and just 1 fileopen as well.
Thankfully, due to the talent of the Adobe Captivate team notonce has this resulted in any of my project files becomingcorrupted.
Regards,
Mark

Thanks. I'll try the DAT suggestion. When you say settings,is there a listing of these settings. I have Captivate configuredhow I want it and just need to know what I need to change.
Also, I have now got to a point where Captivate says I needto reinstall. This is now the third time on my laptop and two timeson my desktop I had to reinstall. Since Captivate does not have arepair option, I have to uninstall and reinstall. When onlyreinstalling, it tells me Captivate is corrupt and I need toreinstall at then end of the installer. At that point I uninstall /reinstall and I now have to reactivate again on my laptop. I amholding off activating (using the demo mode) since I will begetting a new laptop in a few weeks and don't want to activate andreactivate in two weeks with having to reactivate already threetimes in the last few months.
I don't know how Adobe tracks their licensing, but I'm kindastuck. I need the software, but the license keeps needed to beactivating. I have about 50 flash demos that I always work on so Iam always opening and editing multiple files at a time. Would theDAT file change any any affect on the license and reactivating?
Any fix coming soon for the Runtime Error?
Thank you again for your help.
Shawn

Hi Shawn,
No, sorry I don't have a complete list of the settings thatare stored in the .dat file. I do know that this does not includeany custom skins you have created as these are loaded via "ini"files nor does the dat file store any Preset sizes you create foryour recordings as these values are stored in XML files.
In regard to the installer issue you have mentioned, if itwere me, I would report this to the Adobe Captivate team via the FeatureRequest/Bug Report Form
As for the Adobe EULA (End User License Agreement) andactivation and .DAT issue. Renaming the .dat file won't affect yoursoftware activation as this will be stored in a completelydifferent location. Uninstalling Captivate should deactivate anysoftware activations.

Thanks. I will send the problem to the location you told meabout. Thanks.
Concerning the EULA, I can read what it says, but what I'mconcerned about is the number of activations I had to complete dueto the software having problems. I don't want to get to a pointwhere they don't provide more activations due to the fact I had anumber of re-activations, even though it was due to the softwarenot working properly.
I appreciate your time and help.

Hi Shawn,
Uninstalling the software should automatically deactivate it.The EULA ensures that you can install Adobe Captivate on twomachines such as a workstation and your laptop. I cannot see howany software company would refuse you the ability to activate yoursoftware just because you had to uninstall and re-install it on anumber of occasions.

Mark
